Sunday, May 5th is National Matcha Day in the UK.

There’s Cheese Lover’s Day, Popcorn Lover’s Day, Hummus Day and even Ice Cream for Breakfast Day! But until last year, there wasn't a designated Matcha Day in the UK. There is a National Tea Day, but with its unique history and extraordinary health benefits, we thought Matcha deserved a day to itself.

Quality matcha is rich in vitamins and minerals and with an abundance of antioxidants, it is one of the healthiest drinks on the planet, supporting a healthy mind, body, and soul. Regular consumption of matcha is a simple way to do something positive for your health and wellbeing and National Matcha Day is an opportunity to spread the word about this extraordinary tea.

We designated May 5th as National Matcha Day in the UK as the tea harvest in Japan begins in early May and this first flush matcha is considered the highest quality and most precious. High grade matcha is produced exclusively with leaves from the first harvest and it has a smoother and sweeter taste than matcha produced with leaves that are harvested later in the season.

How to observe #NationalMatchaDayUK

• Mindfully prepare and enjoy a bowl/cup of matcha tea
• Introduce matcha to a friend who hasn’t tried it before
• Experiment with matcha by making something new with it e.g. smoothie, energy balls or even ice cream!
• Organise a matcha tea party
• Wear green in honour of your favourite tea

Don’t forget to share how you have decided to celebrate National Matcha Day by posting on social media using the hashtag #NationalMatchaDayUK and tagging in @omgmatchatea and @nationalmatchadayuk
