'Ceremonial grade' is one of the most widely used (and most misunderstood) terms in the matcha world.
Many people use the term as a benchmark of quality, but the reality is more nuanced.
Ceremonial grade is not a regulated classification. Unlike Champagne which must be produced in the Champagne region of France to carry the name, the term 'ceremonial' is not governed or universally standardised. In many cases, this means 'ceremonial' is used as a marketing term, not a guarantee of quality.
So what does ceremonial grade actually mean- and what really matters?
What is 'ceremonial' grade matcha
In Japan, 'ceremonial' has a very specific and literal meaning. It refers to matcha prepared for chanoyu, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Matcha used in the tea ceremony is of the highest quality: the best of the best.
Outside of Japan, however, 'ceremonial grade' has evolved into a general marketing term, and it's meaning has been diluted. It is commonly used to distinguish matcha intended for drinking straight from matcha intended for culinary use.
Neither interpretation is wrong, but it is helpful to know that 'ceremonial' is not a protected characteristic, nor a formal quality classification recognised by Japanese producers. The same tea may be described differently depending on where it is sold.
Why the label doesn’t tell the whole story
Because the term 'ceremonial' isn’t regulated, two 'ceremonial' grade matcha's can differ dramatically in quality.
True quality is shaped by factors that go beyond any single term.
Looking beyond the label: What really matters?
When shopping for high quality matcha, the term ceremonial shouldn't be used as a reliable benchmark.
So what really matters?
- Origin- Japan remains the benchmark for exceptional matcha, with regions such as Uji, Kagoshima and Shizuoka known for their unique craftsmanship.
- Harvest and processing- shade growing and traditional granite stone milling preserve colour, nutrients and flavour.
- Cup performance- balance, mouthfeel and clarity matter more than marketing language.
